Utmaningen:

Improve Packaging Flexibility to Accommodate Increased Product Offerings

Haus and Hues specializes in providing high-quality art prints and picture frames at affordable prices. In setting out to expand their product offerings to include more flexible dimensions, they faced an unexpected challenge with their packaging. Growing their catalog also meant finding boxes that fit a wider variety of frame and print sizes - without leaving damaging empty space or filling their warehouse with stacks of stock boxes.

“We had a very big problem relating to the packaging solutions that were on the market,” recalls Ophir Rahimi, Co-Founder and CEO of Haus and Hues. “We were required to get a die plate for each one of our products that we would want to launch. Of course, we wanted to continue to grow our business, and we wanted to be able to do that on the fly while being nimble with our production.”

Traditional packaging options couldn’t keep up with Haus and Hues’ ambitions. Stock boxes for every SKU would have taken up valuable warehouse real estate. Meanwhile, global supply chain delays made it hard to even source the right sizes in a timely manner, slowing down production and risking damages with oversized boxes.

As they considered their options, Haus and Hues discovered a solution when browsing social media.

“We noticed a number of businesses posting videos of Packsize equipment,” said Rahimi. “Being able to see that in the wild meant that other businesses were happy with their dealings with Packsize, and naturally, with the end result of Packsize.”

Rahimi said they reached out to Packsize the same day and jumped on a call with them less than 24 hours later. The flexibility Haus and Hues needed was clear to Conner Nielsen, Packsize Regional Sales Manager.

“Haus and Hues was looking for a solution that would give them variability in packaging, to be able to have flexibility to build different-sized boxes each and every day,” he said. “Their product SKUs was so variable that they needed something to be able to handle that variability every single day.”

Packsize’s EM7 On Demand Packaging® machine proved to be the perfect solution for Hause and Hues. By producing right-sized boxes for every order, Haus and Hues could instantly offer more product sizes. They were able to scale from four to 20 frame sizes almost overnight, while eliminating the need to stockpile every box size in their warehouse.

“If they wanted to store each one of those boxes inside, it may take up the entire warehouse,” said Nielsen. “But because they can make each one of those boxes from the Packsize machine, they’re only storing a couple of different corrugated SKUs, and they’re able to make hundreds and thousands of different box sizes for each of their custom frames and prints.”

The impact rippled through their operations. With On Demand Packaging®, Haus and Hues brought their entire manufacturing and fulfillment process in-house, boosting throughput, cutting costs, and freeing up space for growth.

“Packsize was instrumental to our process of onshoring manufacturing. With the Packsize, we were able to be as nimble as we wanted to be with all of our packaging,” Rahimi explained. “Likewise, we do the same with our plexi, it’s cut in-house; our glass, it’s cut in-house; and our backboard is also cut in-house. We wanted to make sure that anything we can make overseas, we can make in our facility.”

For customers, the difference is clear from the moment their order arrives.

“With Packsize, Haus and Hues never runs out of stock with any box type that we have - that ensures we’re able to get same day, next day or two-day delivery for all of our customers,” said Rahimi. “When your frames arrive to your doorstep, they’re blemish-free, with no issues, and complete with a beautiful unboxing experience.”

The upgrade to packaging automation also went beyond addressing Haus and Hues’ immediate packaging needs. It also opened the door to new business ventures, including the birth of their sister company Artelo, a print-on-demand service built on the foundation of their newly streamlined operations.

Both Haus and Hues and Artelo are looking forward to even more opportunities as their businesses continue to grow; while knowing they have scalable automated packaging solutions to support them along the way.
